About the tide at GDh. Faanehuttaa

Tides in the Maldives are small. GDh. Faanehuttaa sees a range of about 1.05 metres today, because the atolls rise straight out of deep ocean with no continental shelf to amplify the wave. What matters here is less the height than the timing: whether a reef pass is workable, whether a sandbank has uncovered, whether a harbour has water at the hour you want to leave.

These times come from EOT20, a global ocean tide model built at DGFI-TUM from three decades of satellite altimetry. Checked against an independent model over 2,067 days, the two agree to 3.5 cm and 15 minutes. The model grid is an eighth of a degree, so this is the tide of the surrounding water rather than of one jetty — the nearest sea cell is 6.4 km from Faanehuttaa.
